French Valley Hike

Tours > Parque Nacional Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine National Park was created in 1959 and was named a Biosphere Reserve in 1978 by UNESCO. It is made up of approximately 127,000 hectares and it is the most prestigious and important park in Chile.

The park is known for its flourishing and unique biodiversity. With a great variety of wildlife and native vegetation, Torres del Paine National Park has one of the most diverse ecosystems on the continent.

Due to the glacial history of the region, Chilean Patagonia is home to unique natural formations such as large rivers and lakes including the Paine River, Serrano River, Lake Sarmiento, Lake Pehoe, Lake Nordenskjold and others. All of the water emerges directly from glaciers, which results in beautiful bright colors that amaze everyone!

However, one of the most exquisite places where the natural magnificence and cold volcanic past is embodied is the French Valley where you will be surrounded by huge granite walls and sit in front of Paine Grande’s great hanging glacier. The French Valley is simply a gift of nature!

The hike is approximately five hours long. Once in the park you will take a beautiful 30-minute boat ride crossing Lake Pehoe. You will arrive at Paine Grande Lodge where you will begin your hike to the French Valley.

Pick-up in a private transfer is at 6:45 AM from Puerto Natales. You will arrive to the park at approximately 8:30 AM and take the first boat crossing Lake Pehoe at 9:00AM. Once on land, you will begin the hike that will take you through dense native forests and give you wonderful views of Lake Pehoé and Lake Skottsberg. When you arrive to the French Valley you will walk along the French River and have the opportunity to see large avalanches falling from Paine Grande. It is truly an astonishing scene! Once finishing the hike, you will cross the lake again and your private transfer will be waiting to take you back to Puerto Natales.
