Seno Otway Colony

Tours > Programas Especiales

Seno Otway, just South of Puerto Natales, located between the Brunswick Peninsula and Riesco Island is home to one of the most important colonies of Magallenic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) within the region. The penguins arrive during Patagonia’s summer months and migrate North during the winter to warmer climates reaching all the way up to Uruguay and Brazil.

There is an estimated world population of 1.300.000 Magallenic Penguin couples and approximately 200.000 inhabit the austral coast of Chile between the months of September and April. The penguins can reach a height up to 45 centimeters and can have a weight of up to three kilograms. They are currently in an endangered state and the Seno Otway Penguin Colony not only offers you the company of these penguins, but also a spectacular view of Patagonia’s geography.

Seno Otway Penguin Colony Tour

You will be picked up from your hostel/hotel in Puerto Natales and you will be transported to the Seno Otway Penguin Colony. It is a full-day tour that begins with a wonderful drive North on Route 9, with amazing landscape views including a variety of characteristic ecosystems in Patagonia, including forests, mountains, lagoons, steppe lands and lots of wildlife! After two hours, you will continue on the rural route, heading west, until you reach the Seno Otway coast where you will begin the tour of the penguin colony.

Once you arrive, you will take a small, easy hike through an interpretative circuit where you will see many of the exotic birds, learn about their characteristics, reproduction and how they survive in these cold habitats. During the hike, it will be possible to get close-up to the penguins and have the opportunity to take amazing photographs of their nests and the coastal ecosystem.
