Milodon Cave Natural Monument - Three Caves Tour

Tours de Medio Día

The famous Cueva de Milodon is found just 25 kilometers North of Puerto Natales. It was made a Historic Monument in 1968 and was also named a Natural Monument in 1993, joining the National System of Protected Areas, with a surface area of 189.5 hectares.

It consists of three different caves, each with great history and rich biodiversity. This reserve is one of the most important tourist attractions of the Ultima Esperanza Province. The largest and most visited cave was discovered in 1895 where the remains of an extinct animal (Milodón Darwini) were found. Currently there is a small circuit walk, information panels and a replica of a large Milodón for visitors to see.

PROGRAM:

Small hike through the natural reserve to learn about the major historical and natural attractions.

ITINERARY:

You will be picked up in Puerto Natales in a private transfer and taken to the Cueva de Milodon Natural Monument (30-minute drive). After paying the entrance fee, you will start the hike on a small nature trail to a lookout of the province located about 350 meters above sea level. Here, geological and hydrographic features are shown and you will learn about the region’s icy past and how the caves were formed.

Later, you will begin visiting the three caves located at the reserve. You will first go to the “small cave,” where you will explore the entire cave and see the extraordinary rock formations due to dripping water and carbonate sediments.

Next, you will head to the “Cueva del Medio” (Middle cave), where the oldest dated human settlements were found in Patagonia, dating back to 12,000 years ago, making it one of the most important archaeological sites of the Southern Cone.

Finally, you will go to the largest and most famous of the caves, the “Cueva de Milodon.” In this large cavern that stretches 200 meters deep, organic remains of the extinct animal were found in the late XIX century. It has a large walking circuit with information panels and a life-size replica of the Milodon.

After visiting all three caves, you will return to Puerto Natales.
