Dorotea Range Look out.


Sierra Dorotea, named by Hermann Eberhard, the colonizer of Ultima Esperanza Province, in honor of his daughter, it`s the most characteristic relief of the town, located 5 minutes drive from the city of Puerto Natales. Seen from above, it`s a long orographic formation located in the vast Patagonian pampas.



With its 600 meters above sea level, it offers a spectacular view to the west of the province, being the best natural lookout of the city of Puerto Natales. Also, it`s seen in its fullness Almirante Montt Gulf, Señoret Channel, Last Hope Fjord, the vast Cordillera Sarmiento with its beautiful mountain Dama Blanca, the imposing and the highest one: Mount Balmaceda by the Southern Ice Field, etc.



The whole mountain is covered by dense forests of Lenga (Nothofagus Pumilio) and Coihue of Magallanes (Nothofagus betuloides). Also there is a beautiful native flora like the Lady's Slipper Orchid (Calceolaria uniflora), Topa-topa (Calceolaria biflora), among many others.



Besides the vegetation, there is a diverse wildlife in this place, highlighting the birds. Among the most common birds of prey such as the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), black chested buzzard eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus), Kestrel (Falco sparverius), Vari Common (Circus cinereus) and many more species from forest and shrub ecosystems. Among mammals, it is possible to see interesting animals like skunks (Conepatus humboldtii), the two fox species in the region, Culpeo Fox (Pseudalopex culpeaus), Chilla Fox (Pseudalopex griseaus) and Puma (Puma concolor). Although this trip is a few minutes from the city. It will certainly make you feel in the most distant and beautiful natural spot.





It consists of a beautiful trekking, crossing ancient forests. After reaching the top of this, you will get the most spectacular view of the geography of Patagonia.




Setting off from your accommodation in Puerto Natales to go to plot number 14 located at the feet of the mountain, the starting point for the tour.



The trekking lasts for about 15 minutes on a small pampa, where we`ll cross by domestic livestock and we`ll probably see some Patagonian Hare (Lepus europaeus), as well as birds such as: common Tero (Vanellus chilensis), Tiuque (Milvago chimango), common Vari (Circus cinereus), among others. Once at the feet of the mount, we`ll ascend for about an hour and a half to the famous Dorothea viewpoint. Then we`ll cross a beautiful forest inhabited by many birds like Cachaña parrot (Enicognathus ferrugineus), Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus), Rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda), Pythian (Colaptes pitius), Common Thrush (Turdus falcklandii), among many others. After leaving the mount, as locals call the forest, we will get to the top, about 600 meters above sea level where you catch a glimpse of great Almirante Montt Gulf Señoret Channel, Ultima Esperanza and Eberhard fjiords, the great peninsula Antonio Varas, adjacent to the extensive Cordillera Moore, the White Sarmiento mountain from the Mountain Channel, along the beautiful Monte Balmaceda and Southern Ice Field, the beautiful Prat mountain range and Señoret Mount, the small town of Puerto Natales and all the geography that characterizes this part of the country.
