Full Penguins Colony Tour

Seno Otway, just South of Puerto Natales, located between the Brunswick Peninsula and Riesco Island is home to one of the most important colonies of Magallenic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) within the region. The penguins arrive during Patagonia’s summer months and migrate North during the winter to warmer climates reaching up to Uruguay and Brazil.

There is an estimated world population of 1.300.000 couples of which 200.000 inhabit the austral coast of Chile between the months of September and April. The penguins can reach a height up to 45 centimeters and can have a weight of up to three kilograms. They are currently in an endangered state and the Seno Otway Penguin Colony not only offers the company of these penguins but also a spectacular view of Patagonia’s geography.

The King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is the second largest penguin after the Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri).

The King Penguin is a migratory bird that moves from their nesting grounds found in sub Antarctic islands to search for food. We know that the penguins have been migrating to the coast of Tierra de Fuego for quite some time. The Selknam found remains of the penguins at many archeological sites. The Selknam named them Kéj ‘emkenn.

The King Penguin Park is located in the Bahía Inútil sector of Tierra del Fuego in Chilean Patagonia. More specifically it is located on kilometer 14 of route Y-85 on Block 136, which belongs to the San Clemente ranch.
